New Moon in Virgo: Monday, September 2, 2024

The sign of Virgo is one of the virgin-servant. Modern and outward definitions of both virgin and servant fail to represent the power of this sign, which is found within and moves outward.

Our world history is full of negative implications for servants; they can be unappreciated, often mistreated, and even abused. But this is not the case with Virgo. She is faithful and dedicated, but also powerful and whole. Her service is autonomous and deliberate.

Virgo is related to the words virgin and virago, all of which mean powerful maiden. (See my linked article below for more of the etymological roots.) She is pure (of heart and mind) and innocent (which means she does no harm* and is free from guilt.)

Virgo is associated with the star-maiden Astraea, the Greek goddess of justice, innocence, purity, and precision, known for being the last of the gods to live with the humans before ascending to the heavens as man became increasingly more and more wicked. She could be considered a bodhisattva who was committed, at least for a time, to bring light to the world.

*I have argued in another article that the word innocent has also been corrupted, especially when a young girl is defiled. How is it that she is no longer innocent by modern standards when she has done no harm?

Virgo Characteristics

Virgo is practical, earthy, and feminine. She is representative of the womb of creation, and the commitment to the gestation of an idea, creative project, goal, intention, or dream. She is the sign of the work - both inner and outer, visible and invisible - that is necessary for manifesting your desires.

She is the patron sign of vocations, health and the body-mind connection, daily habits, and organization. She is a sign of purpose.

A healthy Virgo energy is orderly, detail-oriented, efficient, and dedicated. She works best when she keeps her eye on the prize but also marks the steps along the way. She is wise enough to know that self-care is absolutely essential to her commitments to herself and others. This is why she is the sign of healthy body, mind, emotions, and spirit.

An unhealthy Virgo exhibits perfectionist tendencies that can manifest as a near complete disregard for her positive traits because if she thinks she can't be perfect, she might not even dare trying. She may tend to overanalyze, criticize and/or blame both self and others, and show a tendency toward worry.

Luckily, she can, with the right attitude and focus, bring order out of chaos, clear away clouds, and see how disparate pieces fit a larger puzzle. While she is known as a feminine sign, with yin characteristics, she is also a sign of outer action, but action that is steady instead of explosive. If she must gather up the stars of her intended constellations one by one by one, then she will channel inner strength into external results.

Attitude as Action

Turn your wishes, wants, and desires into intentions, and your intentions into actions. One of the most important, and overlooked actions is the act of trust. It is an inner action of the will, so it is not often considered practical, but it can be just as if not more important than the physical actions you take toward your goals.

In Spanish, the word attitude is spelled actitud. I don't think it's a mistake that the word act is contained therein. With Latin roots, it refers to a posture of mind, perhaps speaking of a quality of action. It is the precursor to all actions we would take toward the manifestation of our dreams and goals. It is a pre-action action.

A very large part of manifesting is the ability to trust in your realized dream, insofar as you have been able to envision it for yourself. This means that you can actually feel yourself in the place of your accomplishment. If you are wishing for a promotion, you can feel in mind and body that the position is yours, perhaps to the point of shaking your boss's hand as she congratulates you.

This trust also supersedes any contrary evidence. Perhaps the promotion initially goes to someone else, and your first inclination is one of despair. Obviously, you think, this manifestation stuff is for the birds. Don't give up just yet. Feel your frustration for a minute. After all, you're only human, but DO NOT live there. Hold fast to your intention, to your realized dream. You might be surprised that your coworker turns down the promotion, or leaves the company within weeks, and you are next in line. Maybe you get a call from another company, having seen your resume posted, and the position they offer you is a step up, a promotion albeit with a different employer.

Allow yourself to go with a flow of reasonable actions that align with your dream without being overly controlling or coercive. This means that you act in accordance with your realized goal. Then, allow the Universe move details in ways entirely unforeseen and unexpected. Allow yourself to be surprised. Expect the unexpected.

Setting Intentions with Virgo

What is your purpose for the next month? What would you achieve in your commitments to your life's purpose(s), career advancement, and health? What new habits do you want to implement toward a better life?

Channel the energy of Virgo as you set your intentions.

Health

What do you wish for with regard to your physical health? What steps make sense for you to begin to take to achieve an important milestone in this area? What intention will you set to adopt better habits?

Ex: I intend to follow a healthy eating regimen so that I can detoxify and become aware of how different foods make my body feel. I see myself with more energy, better fitting clothes, and a sleek physique. I might even find a physical activity that doesn't make exercise feel like a four-letter word.

Career

Where are daily improvements needed for advancing in your chosen field? How can you take on responsibilities now that will gain you the recognition at work that you desire? What activities would make you feel more accomplished?

Ex: I intend to take a summer class to improve my communication skills, putting all I learn into practice, so that I can feel confident applying for a managerial position in the fall. I see myself leading a successful division once the kids are back in school and I have the time and energy to re-dedicate myself to my career advancement.

Home

What areas of your life need some decluttering? How would that create spaces in your home that are ultimately more pleasant and productive?

Ex: I intend to have a fully organized kitchen so that meal-prep is streamlined and more enjoyable. I love to cook in a clean and orderly kitchen, and I can see how reducing countertop clutter and better cabinet storage will enhance what I love about cooking, while serving delicious and healthy meals to my family.

Releasing Perfectionism and Worry

How can you learn trust in the perfection of imperfection? What can you let go of in the way of worry, right now, knowing that your worry does not give you more control, but less? What actitud can you adopt as a habit that will give you a greater sense of peace?

Ex: I intend to meditate at least 15 minutes a day, with the goal of releasing all worry to a force greater than my small self. I see my days going much smoother, with an increased ability to rebound from setbacks great and small, without becoming completely derailed.

Let Virgo Serve You

I mentioned before that Virgo is a sign that recognizes the importance of self-care. I have to admit I have always cringed at the oxygen mask example always used when someone wants to illustrate self-care.

You know, the one that says you put your oxygen mask on first in the event of an airline emergency. It's not that this isn't sound advice, it absolutely is, but my problem is that it relegates self-care to times of near disaster. Sure, it makes for a heck of an impact statement in this example, but the truth is, self-care is needed much more often to avert disaster.

Perhaps self-care means meditating with the goal of enhancing intuition. Then maybe I would have had a premonition not to get on that flight in the first place.

One cannot give what one does not have. We might continue giving, our energy reserves on fumes, but then burnout is the result. Without self-care, our wells run dry, and Virgo fails to serve anyone at all.

Make sure you set some intentions for self-care in the true spirit of Virgo.

To your Best Wishes,

♥ Runa
